About 12 years ago, I tried cottage cheese & raisins for the first time. Although I have always enjoyed cottage cheese as a snack, I had never tried mix-ins until that point. At first, I was not excited about the idea of raisins in my cottage cheese. I was on a weight-gaining meal plan at the time & I was required to eat a certain amount of exchanges of each food group each day. The reason why I put raisins in cottage cheese was that I still needed one dairy & one fruit exchange for the day. I saw someone eating this snack in my group, so I decided to give it a try & complete my meal plan with the combo.
To say I was a picky eater would be an understatement, but I. Was. Hooked. From then on, cottage cheese & raisins were a staple in my diet. But I didn’t stop there. Next, I tried pineapples & that may have been better than cottage cheese & raisins, but it was close.
What I’m trying to say is that cottage cheese is really tasty! I know a lot of people think it looks gross or they don’t enjoy the texture. But I’m telling you. Mix it up! Not only can it be combined with sweet fruit, but it can be savory too. There are endless delicious possibilities. Adding something else can create a completely new texture or brighten it up a bit so it looks more appealing.
Simple foods to incorporate with your cottage cheese to improve texture & appearance:
SWEET:
- raisins/craisins
- pineapple tidbits
- peaches
- peanut butter, cocoa powder & sweetener
- chocolate chips
- blueberries
SAVORY:
- bacon
- scallions
- salt & pepper
- red onion
- cayenne pepper
- roasted red pepper
- tomatoes
Some of these combos I haven’t tried yet, but I can’t wait to after writing this post. Next up, I’m going to try a mixture of bacon & scallions. So try it before you bash it! With all the combos of sweet or savory, there’s got to be something for everyone! Let me know if you use any other mix-ins with your cottage cheese. I’m always looking for inspiration!
